2003 MCS DS/DS

« on: 11 June, 2009, 09:28 PM »

I installed a muffler from a R56 MCS on my R53 the other day...

...I also used the R56 muffler hangers...

...there are pre-drilled holes in the rear "frame rails" and the hangers just slide in from the rear as they do on a R56...

...view from the rear looking in through the grille area...

...of course with the straight R56 exhaust, the battery box has to go bye-bye...

...the battery is an Optima Red Top mounted on it's side...

...somewhat finished battery install...

...sitting back on the ground...

...side bumper view...

...I did have to shorten the tail pipes so the tips didn't stick out to far.

I had the resonator removed from my JCW exhaust a while ago, it will going back in because this setup now is very loud... and it snaps, crackles, and pops like crazy.
The car feels much more snappy and quick now, the R56 muffler is apparently fairly free flowing.

Thanks guys...it wasn't that bad to do, especially with the R56 hangers. Cutting out the battery box took the most time(and 2 1/2 cutting wheels).

MrCooper...yes, DrPhil and TonyB(two good friends of mine) both have straight exhaust, as well as a few other guys on there.

It cost me $47 for the two hangers and the four bolts that go with them... the muffler was donated by a guy who put a JCW Stage 1 on his car... the Optima was a straight swap for my OE battery from the guy that sold me the 3-spoke steering wheel...I do all the mods on my car myself(edit:with some help from my good friend Scott at Nutmeg Tool) so no labor cost...so I guess just $47.

Thanks Joe...it did go together pretty smooth.
All that's left now is the JCW resonator pipe install, powder coated black tips, black high-heat paint on the muffler, and a battery cover/box.

Joaquin- that looks sick!!!  I'd imagine it sounds great too.

You never stop, always something new on that car.

Say hi to everyone for me.

Thanks Fillip... it's WAY too loud right now. I'm going to put a JCW resonator pipe on to quiet it down some.

Hope everything is going ok with you, take care.

Very Nice Set up Joaquin, when we talked about this it didn't register until some hours later that you
did the DrPhil straight thu pipe mod.....great idea.  How much of a weight reduction is there ? and if you went with a dry cell battery set up you could even shave off another 25+ lbs....

And now you are all set for M7 rear diffuser as well ?

Any possibilities of getting a U-Tube sound video of this in action ?

I am dying to hear how this set up sounds on a Super Charged MINI..... Grin

The diffusers don't really do anything unless then run from the front of the car all the way to the end of the car.

Thanks Dave...I will try to make an audio/video clip tomorrow before I install the JCW resonator pipe.

No M7 diffusers for me...the space in the rear passenger side under the car is reserved for the PS pump.

How much for the Dark Silver Aero kit?

A couple short vids...this one is cold start with no resonator...

...I installed a JCW resonator pipe today, and it quieted the R56 muffler quite considerably...this is cold start with the JCW resonator...

The excessive snap, crackle, and pop is almost gone, and the slight drone on the highway is completely gone. The sound is more smooth and mellow now, almost like the JCW exhaust I removed, just a tad louder. IMO, it's perfect now. I'll try to get some drive-by footage to post.

WoW what a difference the resonator made.

Great low tone, sounds more stable and less erratic and more matched to your set up.

Any idea what the power numbers are.  Maybe an Ipod dynolicious test of WHP now....of course you will have to weigh your car.  (Al has a place to weigh your MINI on the Cape - get dead on accurate weight if you want Smiley
